12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Universalis Divine grace coming through one man First Reading Jeremiah 20:10-13  He has delivered the soul of the needy from the hands of evil men Jeremiah said: I hear so many disparaging me, ā€˜ā€œTerror from every side!ā€ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!ā€™ All those who used to be my friends watched for my downfall, ā€˜Perhaps he will be seduced into error. Then we will master him and take our revenge!ā€™ But the Lord is at my side, a mighty hero; my opponents will stumble, mastered, confounded by their failure; everlasting, unforgettable disgrace will be theirs. But you, O Lord of Hosts, you who probe with justice, who scrutinise the loins and heart, let me see the vengeance you will take on them,  for I have committed my cause to you. Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord, for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hands of evil men. Responsorial Psalm:  In your great love, answer me, O Lord . Second Reading Romans 5:12-13 The gift con...

THE LORD CALLED ME BEFORE I WAS BORN

Image
THE BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST First Reading Isaiah 49 :1-6 Universalis I will make you the light of the nations   Islands, listen to me, pay attention, remotest peoples. The Lord called me before I was born,  from my motherā€™s womb he pronounced my name. He made my mouth a sharp sword, and hid me in the shadow of his hand. He made me into a sharpened arrow, and concealed me in his quiver. He said to me, ā€˜You are my servant (Israel) in whom I shall be glorifiedā€™; while I was thinking, ā€˜I have toiled in vain, I have exhausted myself for nothingā€™; and all the while my cause was with the Lord, my reward with my God. I was honoured in the eyes of the Lord, my God was my strength. And now the Lord has spoken, he who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him,  to gather Israel to him: ā€˜It is not enough for you to be my servant, to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back the survivors of Israel; I will make you the light of the nations...

FRIDAY WEEK 11 IN ORDINARY TIME Universalis The lamp of the body is the eye Reading 2 Corinthians 11:18,21-30  If I am to boast, let me boast of my own feebleness So many others have been boasting of their worldly achievements, that I will boast myself. But if anyone wants some brazen speaking ā€“ I am still talking as a fool ā€“ then I can be as brazen as any of them, and about the same things. Hebrews, are they? So am I. Israelites? So am I. Descendants of Abraham? So am I. The servants of Christ? I must be mad to say this, but so am I, and more than they: more, because I have worked harder, I have been sent to prison more often, and whipped many times more, often almost to death. Five times I had the thirty-nine lashes from the Jews; three times I have been beaten with sticks; once I was stoned; three times I have been shipwrecked and once adrift in the open sea for a night and a day. Constantly travelling, I have been in danger from rivers and in danger from brigands, in ...

HOW TO PRAY

Image
THURSDAY WEEK 11 IN ORDINARY TIME Universalis In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do Reading 2 Corinthians 11:1-11  I was careful not to be a burden to you in any way I only wish you were able to tolerate a little foolishness from me. But of course: you are tolerant towards me. You see, the jealousy that I feel for you is Godā€™s own jealousy: I arranged for you to marry Christ so that I might give you away as a chaste virgin to this one husband. But the serpent, with his cunning, seduced Eve, and I am afraid that in the same way your ideas may get corrupted and turned away from simple devotion to Christ. Because any new-comer has only to proclaim a new Jesus, different from the one that we preached, or you have only to receive a new spirit, different from the one you have already received, or a new gospel, different from the one you have already accepted ā€“ and you welcome it with open arms. As far as I can tell, these arch-apostles have nothing more than I have. I may n...
